Word Says Read-Only or Will Not Let You Edit

If Word opens your documents but will not let you edit them, or you see an activation or subscription message, start by checking which Microsoft account is signed in.

Sign out and sign back in

  1. Open Word.
  2. Open the account area. On Windows, go to File > Account. On a Mac, use the Word menu and select Sign Out.
  3. Sign out of any accounts currently listed.
  4. Close all Microsoft Office apps.
  5. Open Word again and sign in with your Crestmont email address.

Confirm you are using the correct account

The account shown in Word should be your Crestmont email address. If you see a personal Gmail, Outlook.com, or other personal address, sign out of it and use your Crestmont account instead.

If Word is still read-only

Please submit a Student Support Request. Let us know that Word remains read-only after you signed in with your Crestmont account, and tell us whether you are using Windows or macOS.
